On 1st February 2003, Kalpana Chawla was returning to earth with her six other crew members in the space shuttle Columbia. The shuttle broke apart into flames. All the seven members in it died. The shocking news left the world in grief. The story of Kalpana's life has been an inspiration for many.

Kalpana Chawla was born in 1962 in Karnal, Haryana. As a child, Kalpana loved to draw pictures of aeroplanes. After obtaining a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College, India, she moved to the United States of America in 1982. She obtained her PhD in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colorado.

Inspired by the Indian pilot, J.R.D.Tata, Kalpana had always dreamt of flying. Her strong desire brought her to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). In 1994, she was selected by NASA for training as an astronaut. In 1997, she was in the space shuttle 'Columbia' for her first space mission. The flight was called STS-87. She worked with six other members as a mission specialist. The crew included a Japanese and a Ukrainian astronaut. She travelled over 10.4 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth.

On 16th January 2003, Kalpana again went into space. This was Columbia's 28th space flight, called STS-107. The mission was of sixteen days. On 1st February, Columbia started its journey back to earth. The journey was almost over. Columbia was about 2 lakh feet above the earth. It was travelling at 20,000 km per hour when it lost contact with NASA. Later, the shuttle was found to have disintegrated over Texas, USA. All the seven crew members died in this tragic accident. Kalpana's story shows the value of hard work and sincerity which is remembered even today. Her life is a testimony to the fact that dreams do come true.
