Raja Rammohan Roy

Raja Rammohan Roy, a great social reformer, was born on 22nd May, 1772. His father was Ramakanta Roy and his mother was Tarini Devi. He received his education in Arabic, Persian, and Sanskrit at home. A brilliant scholar, he also mastered English, Latin, Greek, French, and Tibetan. He travelled to different countries, including Tibet and England, to spread his ideas. Rammohan Roy was a champion of the Brahmo Samaj and is most remembered for his relentless fight to abolish the cruel custom of Sati. He authored books on various subjects, contributing immensely to literature and social thought. This great reformer passed away on 27th September 1833 and was buried in Bristol, England.

Summary of Androcles and the Lion

The story is about a slave named Androcles who, while hiding, encountered a lion in pain. Instead of being eaten, Androcles bravely removed a large splinter from the lion's paw, relieving its suffering. The grateful lion befriended him. Later, when Androcles was captured and thrown to wild beasts in Rome, the very same lion was released to kill him. Recognizing its saviour, the lion showed affection instead of aggression, amazing the crowd.
