Lesson 12: Someone
Solutions for the poem by Walter John de la Mare from the WBBSE Class 8 English textbook, 'Blossom'.
Let's Read (Textbook Pages 110-111)
Someone came knocking
At my wee, small door;
Someone came knocking;
I'm sure-sure-sure;
I listened, I opened,
I looked to left and right,
But nought there was a stirring
In the still, dark night;
Only the busy beetle
Tap-tapping in the wall,
Only from the forest
The screech-owl's call,
Only the cricket whistling
While the dewdrops fall,
So I know not who came knocking,
At all, at all, at all.

Writing Activities
Activity 8(a): Write a paragraph
Suppose you spent a moonlit night in a forest guest house. Write a paragraph of about eighty words on your experience. Mention the sounds that you heard there.
A Night in the Forest
Last month, I spent a night in a forest guest house. The moon was full, casting silvery shadows through the trees. It was magical but also a little eerie. I couldn't sleep much because the forest was alive with sounds. I heard the constant chirping of crickets, the hooting of a distant owl, and the rustling of leaves as small animals moved about. Once, a sudden howl of a jackal made me jump. Though a bit scary, it was an unforgettable experience of being so close to nature's nightlife.
Activity 8(b): Write an autobiography
In about eighty words write an autobiography of an owl enjoying the night.
An Owl's Tale
As the sun sets, my world awakens. From my home high in the old banyan tree, I watch the moon cast a silver glow. This is my time. With a silent flap of my powerful wings, I glide through the cool night air. My sharp eyes can spot the tiniest mouse scurrying in the fields below. I love the symphony of the night – the crickets' song, the rustle of leaves. While others sleep, I am the watchful king of this dark, beautiful kingdom, free and alive under the stars.
