Unit 1: Reading Text & Bengali Meaning

In a village among the Kaatskill Mountains, there lived a simple, good-natured fellow, called Rip Van Winkle. The children of the village loved him. He assisted at their sports and made their playthings. He also taught them to fly kites and shoot marbles, and told them stories. Rip helped everyone in their work, but could not keep his own farm in order. His fences fell to pieces, his cows strayed, weeds grew in his fields. His wife complained about his idleness. His son, Rip, inherited his habits. His sole follower was his dog, Wolf.

Activity 3 Answer the following question:

How do you think Rip felt when he heard a voice from the distance calling?

Answer: I think Rip felt both surprised and curious when he heard a voice calling his name from a distance. He was high up in the mountains, far away from the village, and the evening was advancing. So hearing someone call his name in such a lonely place must have startled him. At the same time, he was probably curious to find out who was calling him and why. He may have also felt a little frightened because there were no people around in that deep and dark valley.

They came to a round hollow, surrounded by trees. On a level spot in the centre, he saw a most unusual crowd of people playing at ninepins. They looked peculiar. One had a large head, broad face and small piggish eyes. The face of another seemed to consist entirely of nose! They all had beards, of various shapes and colours. They were enjoying themselves, yet were silent. They looked at Rip with a fixed, statue-like gaze. His companion, it seemed, was carrying some liquid in a keg on his back. This was unloaded, and everyone drank from the keg. Rip was fearful at first. After a while, his fear subsided. Feeling thirsty, he had several drinks himself. Slowly, his eyes closed. On waking, he found himself on the high hill where he had first seen the old man. It was a bright sunny morning. The birds were twittering among the bushes. "Surely," thought Rip, "I have not slept here all night!" He whistled for Wolf, but no dog was to be seen. He decided to visit the scene of last evening. Discussion Corner

Let's Talk Suppose you are trying to wake up Kumbhakarna. Tell the class how you would do this.

Kumbhakarna is the mythical character from the Ramayana who used to sleep for six months and stay awake for six months. If I had to wake him up, here is what I would do:

First, I would make loud noises by beating drums and blowing conch shells near his ears. If that did not work, I would tickle the soles of his giant feet with peacock feathers. I could also ask the monkeys to jump on his huge belly or sprinkle cold water on his face. Another idea would be to bring plates of delicious-smelling food near his nose, because Kumbhakarna was known to love eating. The tempting aroma might finally make him open his eyes!

Writing Skills

Activity 10(a) Write a short story in about sixty words using the hints given below. Add a title to it:

Hints: you went on a tour with your friends — stayed the night in a house inside a forest — slept in separate rooms — when you woke up your friends were all gone — your feelings — how you returned home

The Mysterious Disappearance

Last month, my three friends and I went on a trekking tour. At night, we stayed in an abandoned house inside a deep forest. We slept in separate rooms. In the morning, when I woke up, I found all my friends were gone! I felt extremely frightened and confused. I called their names loudly, but only echoes answered. I searched everywhere nearby. Just as I was about to panic, I heard laughter from behind the bushes — they were playing a prank on me! We all laughed and returned home safely together.

Activity 10(b) Imagine that you have a very lazy brother who is always late in getting up from sleep. Write an imaginary conversation between you and your brother on the usefulness of early rising.

The Importance of Early Rising

Me: Rohan, wake up! It is already 8 o'clock. The sun has risen long ago.

Rohan: Oh, let me sleep for some more time. What is the hurry?

Me: Don't you know the saying, "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise"? When you wake up early, you can breathe fresh air, exercise, and finish your studies on time.

Rohan: But I study late at night, so I feel tired in the morning.

Me: If you go to bed early, you won't feel tired. Early risers have more time to plan their day. Plus, your mind is fresher in the morning. Come on, get up and see how beautiful the morning is!

Rohan: You are right. From tomorrow, I will try to wake up early.

Me: Not tomorrow — start today!

Let's Work Together: The Game of Ninepins

How to Play: Take nine empty water bottles. Arrange them in a triangle on a flat ground. From a distance, take a ball and roll it towards the empty bottles. If you succeed in knocking down all the bottles at one go, you score a full point. Otherwise, you lose a point.

Share Your Experience: Playing ninepins was a fun experience. Arranging the bottles in a triangle shape was easy. However, hitting all nine bottles at once required a lot of practice. On my first try, I could only knock down three bottles. But after a few attempts, I learned to roll the ball with the right speed and direction. It was an exciting game and reminded me of the story of Rip Van Winkle where the mysterious men played ninepins in the mountains.

Rip Van Winkle (Class 6 English) - FAQs

Rip Van Winkle was written by Washington Irving (1783-1859), an American author best known for his short stories like Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Rip Van Winkle went high up the Kaatskill Mountains where he met a strange group of people playing ninepins. After drinking their liquid, he fell into a deep sleep. When he woke up, twenty years had passed.

Rip's wife complained about his idleness. Although Rip helped everyone else in the village, he could not keep his own farm in order. His fences fell apart, his cows strayed, and weeds grew in his fields.

When Rip returned to his village after waking up, he noticed many changes: his beard had grown a foot long, the village was larger with more people, there were new rows of houses with strange names, his own house was empty and in ruins, and the village inn was gone.

Even to this day, a thunderstorm on a summer afternoon in the Kaatskill Mountains reminds the villagers of the strange people playing at a game of ninepins.
