About the Author - Charles Dickens
Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870) was one of the greatest English writers of the Victorian period. His famous works include Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield. His stories often dealt with social issues and the lives of ordinary people. The present text is an adaptation from his popular short story The Magic Fish Bone.

One day, the King was going to the office when he stopped at the fishmonger's shop. He needed to buy a pound and a half of salmon which the Queen had requested him to send home. He had not proceeded far after finishing his shopping, when the fishmonger's errand-boy came running after him. He said, "Sir, you didn't notice the old lady in our shop." "What old lady?" enquired the King. "I saw none." Now, the King had not seen any old lady because she had been invisible to him, though visible to the fishmonger's boy.

If I met a fairy in my dreams, I would ask for the gift of knowledge. I would wish for a magic book that could answer any question I have. Let's Talk Why do you think the fairy was at first invisible to the king and later became visible?
The fairy Grandmarina was at first invisible to the king but visible to the fishmonger's boy. This happened because fairies choose whom they want to be visible to. The fairy wanted to test the king or observe him first without being noticed. When the right moment came, she made herself visible to the king to deliver her message.
It is also possible that the fishmonger's boy was more innocent and pure-hearted, which made him able to see the fairy. In many stories, children can see magical beings that adults cannot. The fairy later became visible to the king because it was time for her to give the magic fish-bone and share her important message.
